You rarely catch them with their wings out , but this is must be how pet tortoises escape from a fenced yard , I am convinced.

Original idea! I don't think Tortoises slowly plod on the ground through all of their 100+ years of life...at least, not while we're watching! They're too smart for that. lol. I agree with your suspicions! Clever drawing. Very realistic! Now, to create a better Tortoise enclosure! <3 ]:3~

This is great! And the wings look natural, too. What a cute sculpture this would make.

I read about a woman in England who had some tortoises stolen from her property. She would let people in the yard to view her collection of tortoises, and apparently someone helped themselves to a couple of the biggest ones. One of the males was devoted to a particular female, and with her gone, he just moped around the yard, looking for his missing mate.

Tortoises are incredible escape artists. You wouldn't believe how well they can climb, and how fast they can bolt for an open gate. That is what inspired this drawing; my tortoises would get out of their pens and be sometimes be found in the next yard... How did they do that over a 6 foot block wall??
Not only that, but sadly , we once found a dead tortoise in OUR yard... it wasn't one of ours! How he got there... he must of crash landed from a great height.
