Mother and baby unicorn by Reptangle Mother and baby unicorn by Reptangle
This is a print of an original scratchboard drawing I did in 1981.
This print was one of a line of prints published by Alberti Design.
The early eighties was the golden age for unicorns... you could sell ANYTHING with a horn in its head, but this print was our very best seller of all.

Yes!  I remember this print when it first came out - early 80s.  Your work is enchanting, and IMO unicorns are one of those timeless creatures :)

That's right, we did this print when the first unicorn thing happened. It is what got us going.
 Have you done unicorns??

Only a few unicorns - both in stoneware and polyclay.  I actually had someone back in 1981 ask me to sculpt a 1:4 scale mother and foal unicorn after this print.  At the time, I was given a snapshot glossy 5 x 7 photo of the persons framed print, so never knew who the artist was, and had thought it was a pencil drawing of the individual who had commissioned me.  You can imagine I was surprised to see you had posted your work here (after all these years), and I was able to finally put the original artist name to the print :)

You can pretty much STILL sell me anything with a horn on its head. Except your dragon series, I am a sucker for the peacock dragons.

No, I found a source for old fashioned ink-it-yourself scratch board. The silhouette is inked onto it and then detailed.

Ahhh, I see. I think they sell some of that at the overpriced art store across from my old dorm. Never though of using it that way - I guess it makes sense. XD I was wondering what the point was of ink-it-yourself board, besides maybe using a different color ink or something.

I don't remember this one as well, though it is certainly lovely! The one we have had hanging on our living room wall forEVER is the one of the house cat side by side with the big cats. My husband got it as a gift from his mother already framed. I always loved the expression on the cat's face...

Haha. No, not kidding. It's in this neat, sculptured black and white frame that harkens to the black and white nature of the drawing. Occasionally, it will trade places with a Skirka print of a snow leopard, but it does have its place on the wall. I have another print around here of yours, but I didn't frame it. I think it's in "flat" storage with my other collected posters and prints down in my studio.

I suspect you are a fan of Carl Brenders too... If not, you should be.... He is an art ghod....

It is kinda odd, but I just have never been a huge fan of photo-realistic wildlife art. I am not sure why, because it is absolutely astounding work!

Wow. I would have laid money on that one. Your attention to anatomical accuracy is superb, and thus you are able to bridge the real and unreal damn near perfectly. While I don't want to paint wildlife, I would like to PAINT like Brenders does, if for no other reason than to bring what's in my head to realistic life. Imagine how awesome it would be if he did fantasy creatures....:faint:

I have a bookmark by Quality Artworks of a unicorn family of two babies by the artist Lena Liu in the exact same post and style is VERY close to this. The baby is turned around and another baby is next to it looking towards the onlooker. I know unicorns were very popular in the 80s, but would you like me to scan the bookmark for you take a look? I tried looking at Lena's site, but she doesn't have the bookmark in her gallery. I guess this piece is fully owned by Quality Artworks if they are even still in business.

Seriously, the semilarities are very striking.

I love this one <3 It has a nice kind of gothic feel to it. I actually prefer the old style unicorn, with the more rugged horn and wilder mane.
