Mini Keeper Grab Bag Dragons by Reptangle Mini Keeper Grab Bag Dragons by Reptangle
This is the newest dragon, the "Mini-Keeper" He is in a pose very much like the giant "Secret Keeper" reptangle.deviantart.com/art/G… but is under 4 inches tall.
This is a grab bag edition! Each one of these guys is painted differently, you won't know which one you've gotten till  you open the box! Each has different colored glass eyes and a variety of Swarovski jewels set in his forehead and held in his paw.
These are hand painted gypsum reproductions of my original sculpture produced by Windstone editions.

These are in our store now!    windstoneeditions.com/products…

The one I got is very, very similar to the one on the far left, with the blue eyes! Except mine has a purple chest.

Actually, they're not bad compared to how expensive the full-size Secret Keepers are/were.

So cute, and such beautiful colors! May I ask, will there eventually be a non-grab version of these for sale?

Probably not. These were intended to be "grab bag" only, because it is difficult to avoid ALL the colors that would be similar to production colors in a grab bag edition.
I wanted to be free to do anything.
BUT we  could do them in one or two simple colors as production.

I'd imagine painting the same usual colors can get tedious after awhile, so I totally understand that.

I was just asking because I tend to stay away from grab bags, I like knowing exactly what I'm going to get. But these guys are so cute, and the colors really all do look amazing, that I think I'll be buying one anyways. :)

Grab bags are is stressful for us too! Sometimes people are disappointed with the one they get, because it is a color they just happen to hate. However, usually someone else will love it, so we have a trading area on our forum.

I bet! I went on the windstone forum to look at all of the colors for this batch, and remember thinking about the amount of effort that went into designing so many different color schemes, and then making sure that each was unique and different from the rest. That's a lot of work!

That's pretty cool, I didn't realize there was a place to do that there. I know for me personally, that makes me feel better about buying a grab bag.

Ms. Pena's statues are collectors' items. :) She puts lots of work into sculpting the original pieces from which these gypsum reproduction sculptures are cast (see here). After that, the gypsum casts need refining (see this link - just look at all the detailing).  Finally, pieces for sale are hand painted (imagine how long it must take to come up with those different color schemes and then painstakingly apply the detailed markings). Keep in mind that Windstone Editions is a small business, and these guys don't get mass produced at some overseas, machine-automated factory supported by a low wage labor force. These dragon pieces are all somebody's handiwork.

So in the end, the price ends up being a fair market value for the amount of materials and labor that go into each sculpture. Also factor in that Melody's Windstone Editions have been around for a long time -- I first saw them in a store as a small child! -- and they are prized by collectors. Remember, professional artists have to make a living in order to be able to produce more art.

Here's a good, longer explanation of why products from professional artists tend to run more expensive than mass produced items.

(And Melody posted further down in the comments that Windstone holds free raffles on its forums, so if you really want one of these guys but don't have the money, you can take a shot at getting one :) )

Because they are hand made in the US. It is expensive to run a business here!

That too! I always try to remind people who ask price questions that handmade artisan items are always going to be pricier than stuff that's mass-produced in factories outside of the US. Professional artists like you deserve to be paid well for your work. :)

All the ones in the photo are so pretty. The lime green guy is very eye catching. Then again, if I had enough laying around to aquire one of these guys he would so be in my collection. I wouldnt be able to convince windstone to trade me one with a lovely knitted lace scarf/shawl would I?

Yeah, grab bag items aren't for everyone! It is stressful to not know what you are getting, but the element of surprise also has a strong appeal to some people! These grab bag items fuel our lively "swap and trade" section on on our forum website.

Yes, I will post them today sometime, on the blog page of the Windstone  forum: windstoneeditions.com/blog
There are so many dragons in this edition I had to take a bunch of separate photos! I am not sure how many images the "blog" will let me post at once, it gives me trouble about that.
