A slightly whimsical drawing of a hatching protoceratops done with colored pencil ink and watercolor.

I also did a sculpture of this guy , which looks very similar to this burrito-like figure.
A few years after we sold about a zillion of these protoceratops sculptures, scientists discovered that the famous fossil eggs I had based this sculpture on were actually oviraptor eggs. Oops.

I drew this with colored pencil, and used a bit of white gauche paint to make the white highlights. I did this so long ago I hardly remember!

I drew the details with colored pencil over the watercolor.

Yeah that was the fossil oviraptor mother brooding her eggs that oviraptor was assumed at first to have died stealing! It was then discovered through cat scan that it was instead a case of a true mother dieing to protect her babies! Anyways I'm sure protoceratops eggs weren't too different in shape. This picture is so cute., wish I could buy the sculpture, but alas no money :(.

After rearing reptiles for 10+ years, Ive come to realize that most reptile eggs are leathery, unlike a chicken/bird egg.

That is why I used fossil evidence to base this sculpture on, I was trying to be somewhat accurate. The protoceratops became famous because it was the first species that had fossil evidence of brittle, hard eggs. Then they turned out to be from another type of dino! So, who knows what real protoceratops eggs were like!
