Golden Secret Keeper dragon by Reptangle Golden Secret Keeper dragon by Reptangle
The "Secret Keeper " is the second biggest dragon I have sculpted. She weighs over thirty pounds and is about 18 inches tall.

This is a cast  gypsum reproduction of my original sculpture produced by Windstone Editions.( check out our website and forum!windstoneeditions.com/ )
She is airbrushed in metallic gold with a bit of violet over the dark brown shading . She has glass eyes and holds a Swarovski jewel in her paw, along with your secrets.

Congratz! I would love to know the general technique for making the scales.

Thank you! The scales are all carved individually in gypsum, sort of the same method as carving wood...and lots of sandpaper. Just takes a loooong time.

How long does it take to make a piece like this?

I don't know!
Most of my medium sized dragons take over a year to finish, but because I  work on more than one sculpture at at time, I don't know the actual number of  hours put into it. This big dragon took over two calender years to complete. That's with an assistant, who helped with the finishing.
How long does one of your sculptures take to complete?

Most of my sculptures take about 6 months to complete, but like you I work on multiple sculptures at once.  And I probably only get about 10-15 hours of sculpting per week.  I am the CEO of a software company the rest of the time.

It shows that you spend your time on these.  I have seen your sculptures for years now.  I'm so impressed.  I've always wanted to buy one, but I only just started collecting art.  I'd like to buy one of yours.

I'm interested in seeing one of your gypsum scales.  Any chance you'd be willing to show what one of those looked like before it is placed on your sculpture?

I carve the scales right on the sculpture. It is all one big lump, similar to stone, or wood carving.
I do some additive sculpting with epoxy clay, but that is only when I make a mistake and need to fix something.

That's is so impressive.  Now I'm curious what gypsum is like to carve.

Here's a photo of a small dragon I just started detailing yesterday. It's still pretty messy looking.

I immediately saw this and thought, 'That looks like a Windstone Dragon.' Now I know why! I used to ogle your work at this one store at the mall all the time.

There's literally nothing I can find wrong with this, and that's very rare. The scales are amazing, the color is fantastic, and her knowing, serene expression is perfect. I am so faving this.

I used to babysit extra hours when I was 14 years old so I could save up for your dragon sculptures. They would sell them in this neat little store that smelled of oak and cigars and had them displayed nicely in a glass case in the window. Those were good memories for me. (I was able to save up and buy both the baby and father dragon, in the peacock colors. I still have them displayed on my dresser today. It's been over twenty years now since I bought them).

Anyways, I was super stoked to find you on DA. You are an inspiration and your new dragon, the 'Secret Keeper' is just gorgeous! Congrats on the (well-deserved) DD!

Welp, time to start saving up again! ;-)

Seriously tho, I think your dragons are so appealing because the amount of detail you put into the scales, the musculature, everything, is so exact and realistic! Then the paint schemes accent it perfectly, so that any moment you expect him to yawn, blow a little smoke out his nostrils, and fix you with that gimlet stare!
